Gimbal Assembly Manual

This manual covers the assembly of the gimbal for both the QAV540G and QAV500 Gimbal Upgrade.

Tools Required

  • 2mm Socket Wrench (included)
  • 1.5mm Socket Wrench (not included)
  • Small phillips screwdriver

Attach IMU Case to GoPro Frame Top

See the picture below for how to orient the parts and use 4 of the small black self-tapping screws to screw the IMU case to the GoPro frame top.

Attach the GoPro frame side to the roll motor

Using the black spacer shown in the picture, attach the motor to the side of the GoPro frame with 4 of the included 5mm long M2 socket screws. Please note the proper orientation of the GoPro frame plate! The hole in the G10 plate that the motor attaches to is not in the center of the plate and proper orientation is critically important. The Motor's Axis is closer to the front of the camera.

Prepare the hinge of the GoPro frame

Fasten 1 12mm Socket Head Screw and a regular M3 nut (not lock-nut!) with a bit of blue thread locker onto the hinge side of the GoPro frame. Please note the orientation of the G10 plate.

Assemble the GoPro Frame

Using 4 8mm long M3 Socket Head screws and lock-nuts, assemble the GoPro frame. Please note the orientation of the various parts.

Attach Neoprene and Velcro Band

Cut 2 small strips of neoprene tape and stick it onto the floor of the GoPro frame like in the picture below. You can also attach small strips to the top of the side walls to help you center the GoPro and dampen vibrations. Thread the included 1/2" velcro band through the slits in the bottom of the GoPro frame. This will be how you attach your GoPro. Even a GoPro with a Lumenier LayerLens installed will fit into this GoPro frame. When using a GoPro 2, the velcro band will go around the bottom floor of the frame -- and not trough the slits. 

Press the Ball Bearing into the Side-Arm

Now, press the included ball-bearing into the side arm. You lie the G10 side piece flat on a hard surface and position the ball-bearing over the hole. Then take a hard object like a hammer and press the ball-bearing into the G10 side piece until it starts to move in. Then press it down the rest of the way by hand. Make sure the flange is on the right side as is shown in the picture. The flange needs to face toward the GoPro frame. The bearing will protrude through the G10 side piece and stick out on the other side. You want the flange of the bearing to be flush against the G10 side piece.

Attach the Roll Motor to roll brace

Using 4 5mm long M2 socket head screws, attach the roll motor to the roll brace as shown in the picture below.

Attach the Pitch Motor to the Side Arm Motor Mount

Use 4 5mm long M3 socket head screws to attach the pitch motor to the motor mount side arm like in the picture below.

Attach Washer and Lock Nut on Hinge

Mount the Hinge Screw through the left side-arm and place the plain plastic washer onto the screw. Then use a M3 lock-nut to secure the hinge. Don't over-tighten the lock nut. The hinge should operate freely, but without slop.

 

Attach the Assembled Components to Roll Bracket

Using 2 12mm long M3 Socket Head Screws and 2 Lock Nuts, attach the assembled gimbal hinge and motor mount bracket to the roll bracket as shown.

Finish Up

Lastly, you will insert your IMU board into the IMU case and secure it with 4 of the small black, self tapping screws. Close the IMU with the included IMU Lid and 4 of the small black, self tapping screws. Please note that not all IMU boards will fit our IMU mounting case. It was designed for 23mm x 23mm square IMU boards. You might need to modify the IMU case to make your IMU board fit.
